Facebook Is About As Private As Paris Hilton
The Associated Press verified the loophole Monday after receiving a tip from a Byron Ng, a Vancouver, Canada computer technician. Ng began looking for security weaknesses last week after Facebook unveiled more ways for 67 million members to restrict access to their personal profiles.
But the added protections weren't enough to prevent Ng from pulling up the most recent pictures posted by Facebook members and their friends, even if the privacy settings were set to restrict the audience to a select few.
After being alerted Monday afternoon, Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker said the Palo Alto-based company fixed the bug within an hour.
"We take privacy very seriously and continue to make enhancements to the site," she said.
The latest lapse serves as another reminder of the perils of sharing sensitive photos and personal information online, even when Web sites pledge to shield the information from prying eyes.
Before the fix, Ng's computer-coding trick enabled him to find private pictures of Paris Hilton at the Emmy awards and of her brother Barron Nicholas drinking a beer with friends and photos of many other people who hadn't granted access to Ng.
So Facebook has fixed it, I guess. Who knows? It was supposedly "fixed" before. At least the amusement factor is high. The AP verified the report of the loophole by viewing Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg's personal photo album. Heh.

Well, it's only pictures. No credit card numbers or SSNs can be gotten from Facebook, I think. Most people have so many "friends" on Facebook that their photos are practically public property anyway. I don't think it's a problem.
These social networking sites as a whole are just a waste of time IMO -- yes I have a facebook but I don't use it to broadcast my nude escapades or to show anything that my mother may be embarrassed of.....I use it mostly for talking to people at my school for meeting up for projects, or maybe setting aside a time to go eat lunch or something, and sometimes to say "hey" to an old friend.
If you use facebook/myspace to put up pictures/videos of doing something you aren't supposed to be doing you are dumb in the first place........
Exactly, you shouldn't be putting up photos or information about yourself that you wouldn't want other people to see, regardless of whether it is in a "private" area or not. This is facebook, not Fort Knox. I hardly trust logging into my bank account online, let alone the security of sites like facebook and myspace.
the thing is though it might be pictures now but facebook does allow lending tree to conduct business within facebook for small loans up to 500 dollars and what if somebody got that info what would happen
why anyone in their right mind would be okay with borrowing money over facebook is beyond me -- if you do then you should have a computer taken away from you forever
they also contact all your friends if you dont pay on time so you cant borrow money from them
That's disgusting and talk about annoying. I would hate to get a message from some lender telling me one of my friends failed to keep up with his loan payments. That would have nothing to do with me and the last thing I would want is to be harassed over someone else's delinquent payments. I suppose that is why Lending Tree uses facebook in the first place. If you don't keep up with your payments, they will embarrass you beyond belief.

the way i see it is if you got to reach somebody call there cell everybody has them and sometimes its easier to reach them on there cell than facebook
I personally use Facebook, I'm a very sociable person, more than most I.T. guys I know.. Some of u have seen some of my partying pictures..
Anyways I have alot of fun with Facebook not only do I get to see the pics of my hot friends (girls) you know, it's also cool to know people you and ur friends know in common etc, and also being updated on all the parties,events, birthdays etc..
Also with commenting on pictures.. If you visit my Facebook profile u'll have fun with some of the vids I've uploaded etc...
I've met many hot girls thanks to facebook hehehe.. Well they see pictures of me and some of their friends (girls) and they probably think I'm cool to hang out with, so they wanna hang out with me too..

I still stand by what I say though......if you borrow $$ over facebook you are an idiot....if you post pictures of you killing a man and get arrested because they saw those pictures, again, you are an idiot. You just need common sense people
