China To Ban Kitchen Sinks Next?
“Eight government agencies, including the foreign ministry, are to tighten supervision of geographical information available online, the official China Daily reported.
There are nearly 10,000 online map websites in China and authorities will close down most of them as they show maps without approval, said Min Yiren, deputy director with the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.”
One of the greatest things about the web is hearing that some clever company or person thought of putting something we already had and used online, and thus made it easier to access. Then comes the innovation and the results can be amazing and change the way we do things. When it comes to maps, we don't know how we ever got along without MapQuest, Google Maps, or navigation systems in our car helping us find the nearest Applebee's.

i guess sense you cant get maps offlline anymore than i guess they want thier people to be as lost as there goverment is
Maybe they wanted to make it more difficult for people to escape. With the lack of freedom of speech, or even thought for that matter, China is fast becoming a prison for free thinking. If they really want to simplify things they should just ban breathing.
they need to ban themselves because they are the ones doing all the harm

PS: do i have to remind you guys, using google map you can not searching "certain" locations of the Glorious USA?
China, does your shame know no bounds? Convenience is all forms must me stopped. They should ban sites that have the weather forecasts too. I'm sure they'll think of a good reason later.

You can get to most of the internet without restriction in China. The rest of the net just requires basic understanding of how to use a proxy server.
Don't know for sure, but I believe maps are controlled under PRC law due to potential military applications. If that's the case it's obviously outdated law since any potential adversaries could easily generate their own from overhead photography.
Though it's hard to tell given the low resolution, I think I'm posting from a location on the right of that thumbnail map heading the post...
How easy it is to cast stones upon other cultures and nations. Perhaps those of you with negative comments should visit the wonderful country of China before chiming in your 2 cents blindly. I visited China in January of this year - the northeastern area a city called Shenyang, and it was fantastic. If everyone were judged by what their government does... how do you think the USA would fare?
most of us were talking about there government not the chinese people
its pretty ridiculous... good thing they arn't a democracy.. or bush would be piiiissed :)
