Amazon Post Lists of Best Selling Physical and Downloadable Games of 2011

It's been a long time since Amazon simply sold books, and these days you can get everything from diapers in bulk to videogames for all platforms through the online shopping site. And lest anyone think game sales are merely an afterthought for Amazon, it's become quite the booming business, both for physical and digital downloads. So what were the best selling titles of 2011 on Amazon?

That depends on the distribution method. In terms of physical disc sales, it breaks down like this:
  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  2. Just Dance 3
  3. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  4. Battlefield 3
  5. Batman: Arkham City
  6. Madden NFL 12
  7. Portal 2
  8. Just Dance 2
  9. Gears of Wars 3
  10. FIFA Soccer 12

Not a lot of surprises there, except for the fact that gamers seem to really like to dance, which would explain why Just Dance 2 and 3 both made the Top 10 list. As for digital downloads, it shakes out a bit differently:

  1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  2. Battlefield 3
  3. The Sims 3
  4. Battlefield Bad Company 2
  5. Sid Meier's Civilization V
  6. Dead Island
  7. Total War: Shogun 2
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  9. Crysis 2
  10. Dragon Age 2

It's kind of interesting that Deus Ex: Human Revolution topped the digital download sales list, while MW3 fell all the way to No. 8.

What game(s) are you playing these days?

Huh, kind of a weird disparity between boxed and digital download. Where there different sales or something? I loved Deus Ex. Good to see it got some recognition.

I'm sure Steam sales and Origin had a big effect on the digital downloads. Deus Ex went on sale a couple times on Steam this past fall and winter (I picked it up on Black Friday for half off through Steam) and Origin coupling with BF3's release.

In fact, every game in the downloads list (with the exception of BF3) was on Steam, and on sale at some point this holiday season, so the download list gives a better idea of what PC gamers are playing, whereas the physical copy is more a symptom of console gamers, methinks.

The disparity is easily explained. Physical media is all platforms, digital is PC only. That's why More War Shooter 3 is so far down in digital, but high up physical. It's why Just Dance is on the list. The only real surprise is Gears. Did not expect that tedium to sell well enough to enter the top ten when it is tied to 360 only. I guess BFBC2 being so high, still, is also surprising.
