AT&T Lights Up VoLTE, HD Voice In 18 Markets
If you're new to the nomenclature, "VoLTE" may look like something you'd expect to see on the label of an energy drink. In actuality, VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE, a feature that allows mobile users to talk and surf the web at the same time. That's something AT&T subscribers have been able to do for a long time now, and if you're one of them, there's still reason to be excited about the service -- HD Voice.
By taking advantage of the ultra-fast 4G LTE data speeds available, VoLTE allows AT&T to offer higher quality calls through HD Voice. It produces more natural sounding audio by stretching the frequency range of audio signals, resulting in clearer calls with less impact from sometimes overbearing background noise.
AT&T is hard at work spreading its VoLTE and HD Voice services. It's now available in 18 areas, including select parts of the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. More are on the way.
Odd as it may sound, the transition to VoLTE and HD Voice is bringing wireless carriers together, despite the ultra-competitive landscape in the wireless industry.
"Recently, we announced our plans to work with Verizon to allow our customers to enjoy that clear audio quality and video calling features when placing VoLTE calls to Verizon customers, and vice versa. We’re working with other wireless carriers on this same functionality, too," AT&T said.
Note that to use HD Voice, you need a compatible phone, like the iPhone 6/6 Plus, LG G3 Vigor, HTC Desire EYE, and Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. You can find out more information in AT&T's FAQ.
