Sony's Wearable OLED Display Turns Your Glasses Into A Smart Device

It looks as if things are going to heat up at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Sony has announced that it is developing a display module that will turn existing eyewear into a smart device that can display visual information like Google Glass.

The device is a compact, lightweight single-lens display module that is equipped with a high-resolution color OLED microdisplay and a micro-optical unit that helps the unit reach its full potential with displaying images in high quality. It also has a miniaturized control board with arithmetic processing capabilities that, according to Sony, is comparable to smartphones. 

“By simply attaching it to a pair of fashionable glasses, goggles, sunglasses, or other type of eyewear, you can instantly gain access to visual information that adds a level of convenience to your everyday life,” Sony explains in a press release. “The module also has potential applications in sports or for work, among other areas, displaying helpful information that supports you in the activity you are engaged in. And this is all done in a small sub-window that does not obstruct your field of vision.”

Mass production of the unnamed display module is expected to start in 2015 and the company will also provide software development kits. While Sony’s display module will undoubtedly be compared to Google Glass, the ability to let various glasses display visual information is an appealing prospect depending on the price. Being able to attach and detach the display module is good in other ways such as avoiding situations similar to one where a woman was assaulted for wearing Google Glass.

Sony will be unveiling its display module at CES 2015, which runs from January 6 to January 9.
