Lamborghini Targets The Filthy Rich With $6,000 Android Smartphone

When I think of Lamborghinis, I think of flashy automobiles that are as much about making an in-your-face visual statement as they are about clipping apexes and hurtling you and your passenger to near (or surpassing) 200 mph. But Lamborghini isn’t just about fast sports cars (or four-door sedans and crossovers if you can wait a few years) — the company also has lent it name out to notebook computers and PC peripherals over the years.

And soon, the Lamborghini name will grace an Android smartphone called the 88 Tauri. The smartphone is being produced by the Tonino Lamborghini Group and will come slathered with copious amounts of leather and metal. Buyers will be able to choose from natural-, black-, or gold-colored steel for the smartphone’s body, while the leather accents will be available in Black, Blue, Brown, Orange, or Red.

Under the expensive exterior lie mainstream smartphone components that should be familiar to anyone that has bought a flagship smartphone in the past year. Powering the 88 Tauri is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB of RAM, while 64GB of internal storage is included to handle all of your app and media needs (yes, a microSD slot is included). A 5” display is front and center, but don’t expect to find a QHD (2560x1440) resolution here; this is strictly a 1080p display.

A 20MP rear camera is included and an 8MP camera will handle the selfies taken with friends on your million dollar yacht. The 88 Tauri features a generous 3400 mAh battery, so we doubt that you’ll need to plug the phone into your Huracan L 610-4’s USB port too often as you navigate from business meeting to business meeting.

Unfortunately, the 88 Tauri will come out of the gate sporting Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and we’re not so certain when (or if) it’ll receive an upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

And now we come to the hard to digest part of the story — pricing. The 88 Tauri will set you back a whopping $6,000 when it becomes available later this month; that’s if you can actually get your hands on one. The Tonino Lamborghini Group is only producing 1947 of the smartphones, with 1947 representing the birth year of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s son, Tonino Lamborghini.
